The story of Krups

1846. The story begins in the forge of Wald, near Solingen, Germany. The owner, Josua Kortz, works with some friends and his nephew, Robert Krups. Robert Krups’ son (also called Robert) will then develop the industrial activities of the forge.

1866. After transferring the activities to the nearby Solingen, Robert Krups and 4 of his sons will then convert their company into a renowned factory exporting its production to Switzerland and the Netherlands.

1900. The Krups Company soon becomes the N°1 German manufacturer of scales; the Krups machines symbolize the company’s philosophy: trying to achieve the highest precision as well as technical perfection.

1951. Despite changes caused by the Second World War, the third generation of the Krups family (Fritz Krups and Dr Karl Körner) bets on a new start of the company with only 30 employees. Dr Karl Körner, a lawyer and cousin of Fritz Krups manages to anticipate the new needs of the after-war society. Fritz Krups the technical expert manages to convert some original ideas into highly popular products.


 

1956. For 110 years, the Krups Company concentrated its efforts on the production of high-quality scales. In 1956, Krups launches its first electric coffee grinders. In just one year, Krups will sell a million of those grinders! Krups proved that way the need of the consumers to see new devices on the market.

1959. Creation of the famous “3-Mix” mixer which becomes an enormous hit in Germany and the symbol of modern cooking.

1960. Small domestic appliances appear in the German kitchens. Thanks to its electric engines, Krups becomes a pioneer in electric domestic appliances. Krups becomes a synonym of expertise and innovation.

1961. It’s the start of the production of the ONKO coffee machines (later called T8). You can still find that model in the Krups catalogue (reference number F468).

1964. It’s the time of an unprecedented economical peak in the whole world. Krups has 4 plants in Solingen and one in Limerick (Ireland).

1967. Krups pénètre un nouveau marché en lançant sa première trancheuse.

1973. Krups adopte un nouveau logo rouge et orange pour les années 70 et 80.

1983. Krups lance sa première machine espresso. Vu la passion qu’entretiennent les allemands pour le café, Krups décide d’élargir sa gamme de machines : machines à vapeur, modèles électroniques programmables et combinaison de machines espresso/café.

1990. L’entreprise occupe près de 3000 personnes et réalise un chiffre d’affaires de 541 millions de DM, dont 40% en Allemagne et 30% aux Etats-Unis. Les cafetières et les mélangeurs représentent la majeure partie des produits vendus.


1991. The first Krups Nespresso (espresso machine working with coffee capsules) is launched in partnership with Nestlé.

1995. Krups celebrates its 150th anniversary.

2001. Krups joins the SEB Group, the world leader for domestic appliances.

2004. Krups launches its “Breakfast” range, combining black and stainless steel.

2005. Krups new collection combining high performance and emotion reasserts the brand’s position on the market. On that occasion, Krups launches a new line of products designed by the creator Konstantin Grcic.
